Study Plan to Use Bone Marrow Stromal Cells (BMSC) at Kansai Medical University
(Osaka, Japan)
[Abstract]
The JSCF had a discussion with
researchers, in Jan. 2004, on the issue of scientific evidence, participants乫
safety, and JSCF乫s involvement with participants prior to informed consent
being obtained regarding a clinical study plan by Prof. Chizuka Ide, et al. (Kyoto University), approved by
the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at Kansai Medical University in Dec. 2003,
which aims for regeneration of injured spinal cords by autotransplantation of
BMSC into the spinal cord of participants 1 to 2 weeks following injury. It was
agreed that the study would be conducted after Sept. 2004, following a safety
test on BMSC transplantation with an immunodeficient mouse model and
resubmission of the application to the IRB. The JSCF and the research team also
agreed to hold an open public seminar prior to commencement of the study.

[Abstract]
In response to nine Japanese with SCI having undergone OEG transplantation in China between February and June 2004, despite the undisclosed treatment results for more than 300 people who have undergone the procedure, the uncertainty about the safety of those who undergo the procedure, and the lack of adverse effect reports, the JSCF has requested that Dr. Huang disclose his protocol for OEG transplantation on their web site and in international journals, provide evidence for the genetic and immunological safety of transplanted cells, and establish a long-term follow-up system for treated patients.
